Superbowl XLVII Wine and Food Pairings
Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! Need some suggestions for food and wine pairings? Here are a few words from our wine maker….
First of all, relax. There is no right or wrong. Everyone has their own preferences, and that’s okay! That said, here are some generalities to keep in mind when planning food pairings:
- White wines with white meat
- Red wines with red meat
- Cold food with lighter wines
- Hot food with heavier wines
- Boiled or steamed foods with less robust wines
- Grilled, roasted or barbecued foods with robust wines
- Spicy food with unoaked, fruity or sweet wines
- Smoky food with barrel aged, robust wines
- Sweeter dishes with sweet wines
Here are some suggestions for pairing food with wines from The Vineyard at Grandview:
- Chardonnay – pork, pasta dishes, lobster, crab or oysters with a squeeze of lemon
- Cabernet Sauvignon – steaks, meatballs, chili
- Rose of Pinot Noir – nachos, creamy cheese balls,
- Sapphire White – white chocolate, semi-sweet desserts
- Sun-Kissed – wings
As always, if you like the wine you’re drinking and it tastes good with the food you’re eating, go for it! If it doesn’t, choose another food or a different wine.
We (Larry and Marilyn) are a product of college life in the sixties. We are suspect of rules just for the sake of rules! (The protest song, “Signs” by Five Man Electrical Band comes to mind. One phrase in the song says “Do this! Don’t do that! Can’t you read the sign?”) You don’t really need to follow traditions to enjoy wine. Drink what you like with the food you like, in moderation!
