our history.

how it all began

Grandview Vineyard started with an idea; a passion for winemaking and a vision to produce and sell premium wine that would raise the reputation and transform the perception of wine in Pennsylvania.

It all started in the early 2000’s when father, Larry Kennel, began to make wine as a hobby. This was a surprise to his college age children, who had never seen him consume alcohol in their Mennonite home. He spent many hours harvesting roadside wineberries and elderberries to make his specialty, completely dry fruit wines. He devoted much of his free time to reading textbooks and other resources about winemaking, as well as attending conferences and seminars to further his knowledge base. Larry sought out wine lovers and winemakers alike, learning by asking as many questions of them as he could. He began dreaming about planting a vineyard and his vision became a reality when he tested the soil on the family farm and it revealed exceptional soil for grape growing. He asked his family if they would be willing to join him in his passion, and with their help, they started planting the vineyard in the spring of 2009. Six members (and 2 generations) of the Kennel Family founded The Vineyard at Grandview, LLC in 2011 and they opened the tasting room and deck in 2013. Now doing business as Grandview Vineyard, founding members Scott & Sarah Haines, along with their children, continue the family legacy of producing quality wine and providing an experience like non other.

With any great idea, there are challenges. Setting yourself apart from everyone else in your field isn’t easy. It is our attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar, our unwillingness to compromise our standards of excellence and integrity, and a continued perseverance that has allowed us to produce wines that display complexity and character in order to represent the best of Pennsylvania.
